    Bike Helmet Design

    Download this and make a copy. Your drawings will be in a journal or scratch paper for now.

    Here's the basic idea...

    Think of WHO you want your helmet for.

    Gather ideas about what THEY would want.

    Brainstorm some ways to make your helmet and features it would have.

    Share your ideas. Modify your design and work on it more.

    Share your ideas again! Make MORE changes!! Keep a log of all of your changes! Don't go back and redo everything. We want to see adaptive design.  =)

    Bike Rodeo Stations and Grading

    *The school parking lot will be blocked off before the crosswalk from 8:00-11:00

     

    Students will earn a minus, check, or plus at each station *most of the course is uphill & students will need to have balance!

     

    Bike Condition and Helmet Fit

    ABC Quick Check: Air, Brakes, Chain

    Check the rest of the bike

    Check proper fit of child’s bike They have to sit on it and touch the ground

    Check Proper Helmet Fit Mark off CORRECT score. 

    - doesn’t fit properly, all is okay, + extra good condition 

     

    Part 1- Starting Line Check Hand Signals- check off 

    -needed reminders, was okay, can show and explain the signals

     

    Part 2 Stopping Signal

    Students ride to the stop sign. As they approach they must slow down and signal. 

    Then stop and check off

    -didn’t signal in time, met most of the criteria, +very safe and had excellent bike control

     

    Part 3 Hazards

    Students must be able to ride on a straight line and then maneuver around obstacles with proper control.

    -had to put a foot down or lost balance, rode okay but needed to slow down or adjust path, +able to steer and move on and off the path with ease.

     

    Part 4 Bike Control

    Slow ride between cones in a zig zag path

    -wobbled or had to touch down, rode okay with corrections, +rode fluidly

     

    Part 5 Balance in a Figure 8

    Students will need to be able to ride at a moderate speed in order to maneuver through the figure 8 without leaving the path lines.

    -had to put foot down, rode with control but may have slowed, +rode with ease.

     

    Part 6 Busy Intersection

    Students will have to pretend to cross a busy intersection (our school’s crosswalk)

    Students must signal to stop when approaching the intersection, get off of their bike, look both ways and wait for traffic to clear, then walk their bike across the intersection. When they are through the intersection they will have to mount their bike and begin riding again to the next volunteer. Volunteer will check off.

    -did not signal before stopping or forgot to look both ways, followed directions, +cautious and able to mount bike with ease.

     

     

     

    Bicycle Rider's Rules

     1. Always wear a bicycle helmet.

     

    2. Keep your bicycle in good mechanical condition (tires, chain, brakes).

     

    3. Obey all traffic rules and signs - always give proper hand signals.

     

    4. Walk your bike across busy intersections.

     

    5. Always ride with the traffic-as close as possible to the right side of the road.

     

    6. Be sure the roadway is clear before entering.

     

    7. Always ride single file and watch for opening car doors.  

     

    8. Most bicycles are built to carry one person - YOU!

     

    9. If you must ride your bicycle at night be sure your headlight and reflectors are in good condition.  

     

    10. Select the safest route to your destination and use it.  Avoid busy streets and intersections.

     

    11.  Yield the right of way to pedestrians.

    Bikes are Made for Only One

    Bike are neat, and bikes are fun.

    But bikes should only be ridden by ONE!

    So if your friend wants a ride,

    Tell him to stay inside!

    Because if on the handle bars he does sit,

    ON his head is where he might flip.

    Then you both will be real hurt, And your bike will crash in the dirt.

    With broken bones, cuts, and skinned-up knees,

    In the hospital you will be!

    And both of you will feel real bad.

    And your parents will be very sad and a little mad.

    Because you and your bike are in a mess,

    And you will have to confess,

    That because you did not follow safety rules, 

    You ended up looking and feeling like fools!!!
