    1. Field Goal- 2 points and 3 points

    3. Game consists of 4 quarters. The length of time of quarters depends on the level of play (Jr. High 6 min.; H.S. 8 min, etc.)

    3. Definitions of playing terms

    1. Block- defensive player prevents an offensive player from scoring by blocking the ball

    2. Disqualification- player who has 5 personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct is out of the game.

    3. Defense- team without ball

    4. Double Dribble- a second series of dribbling after stopping

    4. Players

    1. Each team has 5 players on the court at the same time

    2. The 5 players consist of 2 forwards (wings), 2 guards, and 1 center (post)

    5. Jumpballs

    1. All games begin with a jumpball, with one player from each team jumping.

    2. Rules governing a jumpball:

      1. Jumpers must have one foot in the circle.

      2. All non-jumpers cannot step into the circle until the ball is tipped.

      3. All non-jumpers must hold their spot until the ball is thrown

    3. When two players, one from each team, have control of the ball without a foul occurring the ball is awarded to the team for which the possession arrow is pointing. Each time a jumpball occurs and the ball is awarded to a team the possession arrow changes.

    6. Violations: There are various actions that occur that result in a violation. When a violation occurs, the team committing the violation loses the ball. The other team then puts the ball in play from out-of-bounds

    1. Traveling- taking more than one step with the ball, but without dribbling.

    2. Double Dribble- 1) Dribbling the ball with two hands at the same time. 2) Dribbling after you have already done so and stopped

    3. Carrying- While dribbling, the dribblers hand is underthe ball and he turns the “ball over” and get his hand on top of the ball.

    4. Over and back or backcourt- The ball is brought over the 10 second or half court line and then brought back.

    5. Three seconds- An offensive players can stay in the lane, or key, for 2.99 seconds or less at a time. If the offensive team is shooting the offensive team may stay in the lane as long as they want.

    6. Kicking the ball- A player cannot intentionally kick the ball.

     

    1. 5 Seconds- Taking longer than 5 seconds to throw the ball in from out-of- bounds.

    2. 10 Seconds- The offensive team as 10 seconds to get the ball over half court

    3. Stepping on or over the boundary line or causing the ball to go out of the boundary lines.

    4. Stepping on or over a restraining line during a jumpball or freethrow.

    5. When being closely guarded anywhere in the frontcourt, the player holds or dribbles the ball for 5 seconds.

    7. Personal Fouls

    1. A player shall not hold, push, charge, trip, or impede the progress of an opponent by extending an arm, shoulder, knee, or hip, or by bending the body into other than a normal position,

    2. A dribbler shall not charge into nor contact an opponent in his/her path, nor shall a dribbler attempt to dribble between two opponents unless the space is such as to provide a reasonable chance for him/her to go through without contact.

        If it is a shooting foul, and the basket was not made, two free throws are awarded (or 3 if a three point shoot was being attempted).

    the above personal fouls:
    a non-shooting foul and the 6th or less team foul, the ball is out of bounds.
    a non-shooting foul, beginning with the 7th team foul the team is in what is called the bonus or the 1 and 1

    During the 1 and 1/bonus, if the first free-throw is made,

    another is awarded.
    a shooting foul, and the basket was made, one free-throw is

    iii. Ifitis awarded.

    1. After 10 team fouls in a half, the other team is in the double bonus, in which all non-shooting defensive fouls result in 2 free throws.

    2. Fouling Out- A player “fouls out” after 5 personal fouls (in grade school, high school, and college), or 6 personal fouls (in the NBA).

    8. Defense-Teams play either man-to-man defense or zone defense

    1. Man-to-Man Defense-Each player matches up with someone on the other team to guard.

    2. Zone Defense- Rather than guarding a specific player, each defensive player is assigned an area or “zone” to cover.

  • Basketball Rules

    1. Game Time
      1. Two 20 minute halves with a continuous clock except for the last 2 minutes of each half.  In the last 2 minutes, the clock will stop on all dead balls.
      2. Half-time:  5 minutes
      3. No overtime.  Games can end with a tie
      4. Time outs:  2 one minute time outs per game
    2. Game Ball
      1. Regulation size men's ball
    3. Defense
      1. Only man to man defense
      2. Pressing allowed unless ahead by 15 points
    4. Fouls
      1. Each player can get up to 5 personal fouls and then they will be fouled out of the game.
      2. Bonus free throws will take effect on the 7th team foul of each half.  The double bonus (2 shots) will take effect on the 10th team foul and each foul from that point on in that half.
      3. Shooting fouls are automatically 2 shots.
      4. All technical fouls will carry a penalty of two points (no free throw shots) and the ball out of bounds for a throw-in at the mid-court line.
