Tips for Parents

  • Common Sense Education - Working together, schools and families can prepare kids to think critically and use technology in positive, creative, and powerful ways. The K–12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum's Family Tips and Family Activities cover all six curriculum topics and are available in English and Spanish. Additional languages are available for the Family Tips and Digital Citizenship Curriculum Family Letters as bundled PDFs. Print out these resources to send home, or share them on your school's website or social feed or at your next parent night.

Facebook for Parents is a promotional site for the book Facebook for Parents. That said, there is some pretty useful information here for parents as well as teachers. Credibility is not an issue, given that the site and companion book are operated in conjunction with Stanford University's Persuasive Technology Lab.
There are also links to online classes, free newsletters and a teaching team, all of which can open the door to the safe use of Facebook.
Clean-looking and straightforward, FacebookForParents is a quality site. The links to class registration and newsletter signup are easy to find, and the process is pretty standard.
The site addresses the potential hesitation parents may feel when registering for a Facebook account, especially by debunking the myth that friending children is tantamount to spying on them in their bedrooms.
For teachers, a short breakdown of how Facebook can be used to instill young people's leadership and professional skills is quite useful.
Keeping in mind that the goal here is to sell a book, FacebookForParents.orgdoes offer enough content samples to make it worth a visit. For those who may want a little more, the classes and newsletters will get you there.
Great for a one-time stop, but if you're looking for more, you'll have to register.

FLIPPED OUT: This article is about how teachers are asking students to preview lessons at home prior to coming to class.  This strategy is called 'Flipping the Classroom' because students are introduced to material prior to learning it in class by the teacher.  This method of teaching is very effective with engaging students as well as improving their understanding to the lesson.  I will require students to preview every math lesson every night prior to our lesson.  This was a key factor in the improvement of students' understanding and motivation last year.

    TimeToTalk.org
A resource for parents, TimeToTalk.org offers a kit for adults to talk with kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Many of the topics addressed on TimeToTalk.org are not appropriate for most classroom settings, but the site is an excellent resource to which teachers can refer parents when they have questions about how to talk to youth about substance use.
