Sunday Message - August 7, 2022
Dear Laguna Road Families, August 7, 2022
I hope you had a great summer break, and you were able to spend time as a family, rest, and experience adventure. It’s hard to believe that we are one week away from the first day of school. We are excited to begin the 22-23 school year! Last year our theme was “Better Together.” We knew that the year would be full of challenges and that we would need to lean on and support one another. Thank you for being part of the Laguna Road community where we come together to support our students, staff, and community. We made so many great memories, made excellent academic and social-emotional growth, and regained what we love about Laguna Road - being together!
This year our theme is related to belonging. Not only do we want to be there for one another, we want to be known, and we want to feel like we belong. We hope you will join us in many opportunities to share yourself and your family, and get to know the beautiful and diverse people that make up Laguna Road!
We have many exciting plans to create belonging for our students. We continue to care for the whole child, focusing on social emotional learning and student-centered teaching approaches. We believe that our students must feel cared for, known, and be taught social emotional skills. We also believe that we must hold high academic standards for our students and teach them to think critically so that they can develop as independent learners. We have been selected to continue our Cotsen journey as a third-year school. This will continue professional growth for our teachers to deepen their study and implementation of Balanced Literacy, a reading and writing approach that is asset-based and individualized for students. With our Phelps grant and your support through SOS (Support Our School), we are enhancing our Project Impact Center with new library furniture and updated STEM Lab tables. Students can go into the Project Impact Center to deepen curiosity, explore their passions, and be empowered to create in a way that impacts their world. We are also launching our first kindergarten Korean dual language class with a 50/50 language model. We are excited for children in our community to become biliterate and bilingual, and for the additional opportunities and experiences that will come by being part of a diverse community. Our PTA and SOS Foundation are already making plans for the school year. We hope you will join us in creating memories for our students, and in creating a community where we all belong and work together to make a positive impact in the world.
As you are thinking and planning for the start of school, I wanted to share some important information and updates with you.
Office Hours
Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Please come by if you need help with anything!
Annual Information Review (AIR)
Last week you received an email to fill out your child’s annual information review (AIR). The email came from registrar_laguna_road@myfsd.org. Please reach out to the office if you have any trouble filling it out for each of your children, or if you did not receive the email. Please complete these important forms before the first day of school.
Back to School Information
The first day of school is Monday, August 15th. School begins at 8:30am. See our slightly revised bell schedule, which is also on our school website. Class placements will be emailed to parents on Friday August 12th by 5:00pm. Class lists will not be posted on the office windows for student privacy reasons.
Back to School Night
Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, August 24th. We hope that you will join us to hear important information from your teacher. PTA is planning a food truck, and we will have our first PTA meeting at 6:00pm. Watch for more information to come for the grade level presentation times.
Breakfast and Lunch
Students in FSD will continue to have free breakfast and lunch this school year. The breakfast will be located at the Roadrunner Cafe beginning at 8:15am (where students normally get their lunch). This year students will have to punch in their student ID number for meals like they used to before the pandemic. Please practice their student ID number with them. :) We will no longer serve Super Snack at Laguna.
Covid Protocols
The Fullerton School District continues to follow COVID-19 guidelines set forth by the California Department of Health. Here is a link to those guidelines.
-
Masking continues to be optional, and we still have masks available for students, staff, and visitors as needed and requested. If you would like your child to wear a mask, please communicate with him/her about when to wear their mask.
-
Cleaning will be done regularly, and students will be washing and sanitizing their hands throughout the day.
-
We will continue sending out close contact notices if you or your child are named a close contact. Please have your child stay home if he or she tests positive or has any symptoms. Our school nurse and office team can help you determine when it is safe to return to school.
Parking Lot Procedures
Please review our parking lot and drop/off pick up procedures. Drop off and pick up can be difficult times of the day for our community, and for everyone trying to safely pick up their child. Please plan with your child how he/she will be dropped off and picked up.
Reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to a new school year where we can continue providing a balanced education in a safe and caring environment. Enjoy your last week of summer!
