Learn About Community Schools
What is a Community School?
Community Schools take a whole-child, whole-community approach to education, recognizing that students’ learning is connected to their health, well-being and sense of belonging.
Schools become hubs where families, educators, and community partners work together to strengthen learning, build relationships, and address barriers to student success.
Four Pillars of Community Schools
-
Integrated Student Supports: Connecting students and families with academic assistance, health care, mental health services, and other resources that support learning and well-being.
-
Family and Community Engagement: Building trusting relationships and creating meaningful opportunities for families and community partners to participate in school life.
-
Collaborative Leadership and Practices: Bringing educators, students, families, and community partners together to shape priorities, share decisions, and strengthen school communities.
-
Expanded Learning Time and Opportunities: Offering learning and enrichment beyond the regular school day, including before- and after-school activities and summer programs.
Shaped by Our School Communities
At FSD, each designated Community School has a site-based advisory committee that helps guide the program. Family input helps identify priorities and shape services that reflect each school community’s strengths and needs.
