Annual Preschool Event Offers Glimpse Into Fullerton School District Early Learning Programs

Preschool families from across Fullerton School District recently gathered at Richman Elementary School for the District's annual early learning celebration, where this year's "Splash Bash" theme immersed children in ocean-themed books, interactive activities, and hands-on learning experiences.

More than a day of fun, the May 16 event offered a glimpse into the play-based, child-centered approach that defines FSD's preschool program and helps prepare the District's youngest learners for future success.

“Events like Splash Bash remind us that learning at this age should be engaging, interactive and fun, while allowing families to experience it firsthand,” said Linda Prieto, Preschool Program Specialist. “When children are excited to learn, they develop confidence and skills that benefit them throughout their educational journey.”

The event featured hands-on activities designed to spark exploration, creativity and engagement, including sensory play, reading corners, arts and crafts, and a fun mermaid sack race. These experiences reflect the rich, play-based learning that takes place daily in FSD preschool classrooms. Families also received tote bags filled with literacy resources to support learning at home.

For Diana de la Teja, whose son attends preschool at Pacific Drive Elementary School, the program has provided a strong foundation for learning and growth.

“It’s so beneficial for children to be with their peers and learn together,” de la Teja said. “They begin learning the alphabet, writing their names and expressing themselves through creative activities. They learn routines, behaviors and social skills that help prepare them for that next step.”

FSD's preschool program is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, which encourages learning through play, exploration and collaboration. Offered through both state-funded and tuition-based options, the program helps children develop the social, emotional, cognitive and academic skills needed for success in kindergarten and beyond.

"Early childhood education lays the foundation for our little ones to take big steps toward a lifetime of learning," said Timothy Bongco, Assistant Director of Preschool Programs. "Our inclusive preschool program is designed to meet each child's unique needs while fostering curiosity, creativity and a love of learning."

Registration is open year-round for children ages 3 to 5, with part-day, full-day and full-year options available. Children must turn 3 years old on or before December 1 of the current school year.
