Flutes Across the World (Update 10/4/2017 8:50)

FULLERTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

PRESS RELEASE

DAVID HENDRICKS, CHIEF OF POLICE

Sergeant Jon Radus Public Information Officer Cell (714) 357-4405 Office (714) 738-6838

On Thursday, September 28th, 2017, the Fullerton Police Department was contacted by the Fullerton Elementary School District regarding a call they had received by the California Department of Justice (DOJ). According the to the Fullerton Elementary School District, they received a call from the California DOJ that day indicating the DOJ was conducting an investigation regarding a male who had possibly distributed flutes tainted with bodily fluids in schools within several Schools Districts, and one of those School Districts included the Fullerton Elementary School District.

Because of the nature of the call and the limited information provided to the District, the Fullerton Elementary School District requested assistance from the Fullerton Police Department in determining the veracity of the phone call. The Fullerton Police Department immediately contacted the California Department of Justice’s Office of the Attorney General, who confirmed they were conducting the investigation. They stated that they did not need any assistance from the Fullerton Police Department and that their investigation was in conjunction with the United States Postal Inspector. The California DOJ clearly stated that there was no need to collect any flutes that were used in the Fullerton Elementary School District and that the nature of the phone call was simply a courtesy call to let the Fullerton Elementary School District know that there was in fact in an investigation that would be released to the media in the near future.

As such, the Fullerton Elementary School District notified the families in their District of the investigation and of the fact that they did not need to collect the flutes per the direction of the California DOJ.

Last night, the Fullerton Police Department received a call from the United States Postal Inspector regarding the case. As part of the investigation, they are now requesting those students who received flutes at Rolling Hills Elementary School to package the flutes they received in a paper bag and turn them in to the Fullerton Police Department.

It is important to note that, at this point, there is no indication that these flutes are in fact tainted. This is being done in an abundance of caution. The Fullerton Police Department is simply collecting these flutes for United States Postal Inspector, and as of this time, has no further information on the case and investigation.

Anyone with questions about this case is encouraged to contact the California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General’s San Diego Field Office at (619) 738-9000 or the United States Postal Inspector Service at (626) 405-1352.

Those wishing to provide information anonymously can call Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1(855) TIP-OCCS or go to www.p3tips.com.
